RENOVATION
PROGRAM
GSB
owns three apartments located in the NEFA complex of Beius.
NEFA was created as a block of apartments for NEFAMILISTI,
which in Romanian means "without families." There
are approximately 250 people living in one or two bedroom
apartments in this complex. Some of the apartments have
been remodeled by Habitat For Humanity with the CASA NOASTRA
project (see www.habitatbeius.ro). These renewed apartments
have both hot and cold water and showers.
The
apartments that have not been remodeled belong to local
families. Most of them have access only to cold water. They
don't have showers and every three apartments share a common
toilet.
The
majority of the building is in neglected condition and needs
remodeling, including the GSB units. At present, young,
married orphans with children rent 1 of these GSB rooms.
They are unable to rent other apartments in town due to
both financial limitations and the unwillingness of local
owners to rent to people coming from the orphanages.
Other
occupants of the GSB rooms are orphans that formerly lived
in the streets of Beius. For example, Costica, 20 years old,
used to live in extremely inadequate housing without access
to running water, heat, or a toilet: first in the foundation
of an unfinished construction site in Beius where winter
temperatures drop to minus 15 Celsius (+5 Fahrenheit), and
later on a landing in the stairway of the NEFA block.Starting
in February 2004, Costica will work on the HFH site as a
GSB client and will live with other young colleagues in
a room in the NEFA complex.
Last
year we helped a young orphan, Margareta, to renew a one-bedroom
apartment in NEFA block that she had bought with the help
of her sponsor.

young orphans a decent home? Please click
